Trinity College
The oldest university in Ireland founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth and is known as Trinity College in Dublin.
Over 12,00 students attend the university from all over the world.
The college boasts 47 acres of cobbled ground and greenery.
It is placed in the heart of the city and faces the former houses of parliament (now a Bank of Ireland).
It has architecture from over three centuries and has many buildings of all ages, new and old.
Trinity is one of the seven ancient universities in the English-speaking world and is the only one outside of the United Kingdom. It is a highly respected university worldwide and prides itself on numerous historical achievements, including the development of the ISBN system. The university has been attended by quite a few famous names such as, Jonathan Swift an Irish poet who is most famous for the book ‘Gulliver’s Travel’s’, Bram Stoker who was another Irish writer famous for the classic horror story Dracula, the playwright Oscar Wilde (there is a Oscar Wilde Centre which visitors can view pictures and facts) one of the most successful playwrights in Victorian London, a few Nobel prize winners also attended the college.
One of the most interesting things about the college is its library. The library is the largest research facility in Ireland to date containing 4.25 million books and a momentous collection of manuscripts, maps and printed music. One of the most famous books which the library houses, is The Book Of Kells. Its is located in the ‘Old Library’ along with other ancient texts such as The Book of Durrow, and The Book of Howth.
Trinity College has always had a strong sporting tradition and has 49 sports club associated to the Dublin University Athletic Club. The oldest Clubs include Dublin University Cricket Club, Dublin University Boating Club, Dublin University Hockey Club and Dublin University Football club which plays rugby, is the world’s oldest documented ‘football club’ being founded in 1854.
The Trinity Ball is another accomplishment for the university. It is Europe’s largest private music party, drawing over 6,000 partygoer’s every year. In 2009 it will be the 50th anniversary of the Trinity Ball.
The university is a great experience whether it is for educational purposes or just as a tourist visit. Place in the hub of Dublin city it is not hard to find and is an excellent place to try to soak up the history of one of Europe’s most oldest and prestigious buildings.
