Dublin Castle
Situated on historic grounds the area around Dublin Castles dates back
to the 930's from when a Viking Fort once stood. Located
beside the River Liffey it became an important fort for the invading Danes.
After the Vikings had been kicked out by the Normans on 1169 they also
seen the importance of the site. A fort had been setup and the Normans
started expanding into Ireland. After some years King John of
England ordered a more permanent fortification to be constructed,
one made from stone, great strong walls and good ditches for defense.
The fortification was built by 1230 and remained in the hands of the English
until 1922.
The castle had many different functions through-out the years. From being a fortified prison to being a host for European Union Presidencies. Dublin Castle has lots of history and makes a highly recommended place to visit when in Dublin. To read more on its history click here.
